Santa Clarita Valley History In Pictures

John Gifford Home
Newhall, California

John T. Gifford of Genessee County, New York, was 29 years old in 1876 when he oversaw construction (as crew chief) of the San Fernando (train) Tunnel at the end of Railroad Canyon in what would become Newhall. He went on to become Newhall's first train stationmaster.

John and his wife, an Englishwoman nee Sarah Beckworth (visible in doorway?) moved into this house on Pine Street in 1883.
