         and  sort of  above  ground  retaining wall f or  his  kids,  The  plastio  pool  ruptured
         one  ni ght,  washing  everything  down  t o  t he  Santa  Clara  Ri ver.  Dean  believes  that
         there  was  onoe  a  t ull  basement  under  the  house.

             Ri ght  a:f't er the  Februai-y  1971  earthquake ,  Newhall  Land  di d  ext ensive  rein-
         f orcement  of  the Ranlh  House,  even  through  the  cattle  business  was  declining and
         Magic  Mountain wae  being built.  Only  a  year  l ater J.D.  was  off red a  position  of
         running Newhall Land's Tr avel Village,  the  company  offering  a  prof i t  sharing deal .
         J .D.  and  hi s  wife  worked  12  to  18  bours  a  day  on  that  campground  wi th hardly  any
         profit  reali sed.  He  bailed out  to  Santa Paula  op  ning  the  Mutah  Stor .
