T
he Baker Ranch Rodeo last Sunday made a record for attendance, and so far as could be judged the performance was equal to anything in the country in that line.
The full seating capacity of 18,000 was utilized and it is said that fully as many more were turned back after the seats were sold out. Most of the disappointed ones drove away, but several thousand saw what they could of the show from the adjoining hills.
About 14,000 autos were parked in and around the grounds, and the task of getting a car out of that field was one for the experts. As the crowd had to get into the already congested traffic, a jam resulted that held the cars till a late hour, the congestion being from the rodeo grounds to Saugus. Officers kept traffic going in the fine shape from Saugus to the tunnel, although it was very heavy. Two special trains came out from Los Angeles, landing 1300 people on the grounds, most of whom found no seats. A third train was ready but on receipt of notice that all seats were gone, was abandoned.
The rodeo itself went off brilliantly with no serious accidents. The contestants numbered 125 cowboys and cowgirls, and all the contests were fought out spiritedly. It is believed several new records were set at the affair, but officials were still checking last night to make sure.
The contest winners were as follows:
