There are two basic methods for searching through the Santa Clarita Valley History In Pictures (scvhistory.com) archives. The first is by using the Table of Contents; the second is by using the Search functions.
Table of Contents
From the home page, click on "Go To Contents," then examine the Contents carefully. You will see that it is arranged fundamentally by community. Clicking on the community name will bring up a list of photographs and stories associated with that community. The Table of Contents also contains links for People, Obituaries and some popular points of interest such as Beale's Cut, Melody Ranch and the St. Francis Dam. If you're a regular visitor and you wish to see what we've added in the last couple of months, go to Contents and click on "What's New." For an overview of Santa Clarita Valley history, click on "General Interest" from the Table of Contents.
Search engines search through all text, not just titles. The best method is to enter the most unique word you can think of, and limit your entry to one or two words. For instance, if you're seeking photographs or information about Henry Clay Needham, enter "Needham," or for Rev. Wolcott Evans, enter "Wolcott." The engine lists the best matches first, so enter words that you think would appear next to each other, such as "Lang Station." Do not use the engine to search for broad categories such as "Newhall pictures." It would bring up so many "hits" that the results would not be helpful. (To search for Newhall pictures, you would want to use the Table of Contents.) In fact, don't enter words such as "Newhall" or "pictures" at all. Every page at this site contains the word "pictures." And spelling counts!
