James Wallace Powell


James Wallace Powell, 91, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at his home in Newhall, California. Jim was born on November 16, 1921 in Topeka, Kansas. He was the oldest son of John L. Powell and Marie (Mondt) Powell.

Jim served in the Army Aircorps in WWII and was shot down during a mission over Formosa ( Taiwan). He married his wife of 69 years, Jeanne Alice Racy, in 1944.

Jim had a long career in the aerospace industry, retiring from Hughes Aircraft in 1986. He was very active in his church community. He loved to sing in his church choir and in a barbershop quartet, and frequently volunteered his time preparing taxes for seniors, mediating disputes, and helping at Meals on Wheels.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jeanne; son Thomas J. Powell; daughter Michelle L. Powell; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two siblings.

Sunday service in honor of James Powell will be held at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Friendly Valley Community Church with Reverend Bob Wicherts officiating. Light refreshments will be served after the service.
