Newhall School, Fifth Grade, 1946
Newhall, California

There were 35 children in the fifth grade at Newhall Elementary School in 1946, when the school housed the first through ninth grades. Children who wished to continue their education did so at San Fernando High School until 1948, when the upper grades moved to the brand-new William S. Hart Junior and Senior High School in Newhall. Hart graduated its first group of seniors in 1949.

Judy Stevens (neé Judy Borden), who went on to teach math at Placerita Junior High School and Saugus High School from 1970 to 1996, is in the third row, second from left. Charlie Cooke, who would become the Spiritual Leader of the local Chumash tribe in the 1990s, is behind Judy in the back row, second from left.
