Emilia Duran is behind the wheel of a 1953 DeSoto Powermaster* in this undated 3x3-inch BW photograph, which may have been shot near her home on the Saugus-Ventura Road, at what is now the southeast corner of Magic Mountain Parkway and Valencia Boulevard.

Born in New Mexico as Emilia Appelzoller, she married Samuel Duran (1903-1970) and came to the Santa Clarita Valley when her husband got a job on the Newhall Ranch in the mid-1930s. The couple had six children, not necessarily in this order: Bertha (b. 3-4-1925, married Alpha Clark); Merci (m. Blinko); Esther (m. Dyer); Sam; Alice (m. McEvoy); and Noemi (m. Lund).

The children were grown by the time Emilia and Samuel Duran left in the early 1960s to work at a ranch in Bouquet Canyon.

The photo contributor is Jennifer Jones; she is great-granddaughter to Emilia and Samuel Duran and granddaughter to Bertha and Alpha Clark. Her parents are Eva Clark (Jones) (b. 2-22-1956) and Darrell Jones (b. 3-25-1946). Jennifer graduated from Hart High in 1994.

*Thanks to Randy Phillips for identifying the vehicle.
