Santa Clarita Valley History In Pictures

La Esparanza
Piru, California

[FULL IMAGE][CLOSEUP]

Piru takes its name from a Tataviam Indian village here, which is now under Lake Piru. It was the westernmost extent of Tataviam inhabitation in the Santa Clara River Valley; to their east were the Ventureño Chumash.
Tataviam Indians, a small group of speakers of a Takik dialect (Uto-Aztecan language family) were present in the Santa Clarita Valley by AD 500, around the time of the introduction of the bow and arrow.
