Three-penny envelope (now empty), postmarked Newhall, Jan, 20, 1881 five years after the town of Newhall was founded and three years after it moved to the vicinity of Railroad Avenue and Market Street. Envelope addressed to J.A. Fisher Co., Box 876 (846?), Los Angeles; received the same day at Los Angeles (marked on back; see inset). Sender unknown. In all likelihood this envelope was hand-cancelled by Newhall Postmaster George Campton at his general store on Railroad Avenue (then known as San Fernando Road).
Acquired by SCVHS on Dec. 1, 2003, from a stamp dealer in Chicago, Ill.
