Henry T. Gage & the Red Rover Mine
Acton, California
California Gov. Henry T. Gage (1899-1903), center, and Ed Brough, right, overlook the Red Rover Mine in Acton sometime between 1890 and 1912. Gage owned the Red Rover and most of the other profitable mines in the Acton area. Brough was employed as the Red Rover's superintendent.Paris Brough, Ed's son and an employee of the mine, wrote this original caption:
A photo of Governor Henry T. Gage on left and Dad, Ed Brough, on the right. 1890 to 1912.
Roofed headframe & steam hoist house. Office, boarding house and home behind trees.
Blacksmith shop in mid center.
The steam powered stamp mill is out of sight below trees at right.
Dad was Superintendent at the time of photo but I do not know the year it was taken. He was in charge for a number of years.
The view is from the saddle south of the shaft looking north to head of Red Rover valley and the old Erickson Ranch.
The buildings in background are the horse barn, miners cabins and the Shilling home is behind trees at right. Shilling was mine Foreman under Dad.
You will recall the Shilling family. One or the other of these adults later became a doctor of some kind and lived in Highland Park. They lost a son while at Acton, I believe his name was Harold.Paris Brough
