St. John's Subdivision
Newhall, California
[See Oversized Version in New Window]
St. John's subdivision was planned as a dry colony by prohibitionist Henry Clay Needham of Newhall and his pal, Gov. John St. John of Kansas, in the 1880s-90s.
It didn't quite work out, as the saloons outnumbered the churches in Newhall. However, the subdivision of the land went through,
and references to "St. John" can sometimes be found in deeds of trust for area properties today.
