Putting up the Havenstrite oil well in Newhall, ca. 1949.

Russell E. Havenstrite brought in the first of the wells in the Del Valle (Hasley Canyon) area near Castaic in 1940 (Perkins). In 1949, Russell and his brother, Homer, drilled successful wells in Newhall near today's San Fernando Road and Sierra Highway (seen here) and eventually sold out to Royal Dutch Shell (Reynolds).
