Railroad Avenue, c. 1900
Newhall, California

Railroad Avenue, also known as "Main Street" and "San Fernando Road" (not to be confused with the 20th-century San Fernando Road, which is a different street), was the center of activity in Newhall in the 19th Century. This c. 1900 photograph shows the Oil Exchange building, which the California Star Oil Company and its successor, Pacific Coast Oil Company, used to ship oil by rail from Pico Canyon (Mentryville); and Lindenfeld & Landell's general store, which doubled as the Newhall Post Office. Lindenfeld and Landell's store was previously owned by George Campton.
